Mask Giveaways - A Covid-19 Response Project

What are Mask Giveaways?

Purpose

The mask giveaway was formed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. We know that the impacts of Covid-19 are hitting Black, brown, and low income communities the hardest. Our goal is to lower the disparities seen in Dane County. We want to help protect our community and curb the spread of Covid-19.

What is it?

The mask giveaway is a project that has volunteers go to different locations like grocery stores, community centers, etc. to give out free masks to individuals in the community.

Benefits of this Project

  • Help lower the disparities seen in Dane County that are disproportionately impacting Black, Latinx, and Native communities.
  • Help protect our community and curb the spread of Covid-19
  • Great way to put your anti-racist and restorative justice work into action

How to get involved?

Do you sew? We need your help!  Please join us by either sewing masks, donating masks, or donating money to purchase masks.

We also need volunteers for our mask giveaways. We will be doing more mask giveaways in the future at local stores and community centers. If you are able to volunteer your time, please join us at our mask giveaways.

Mask Giveaway Project Update

The Dane County Timebank has been organizing mask giveaways as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic. We know that the impacts of Covid-19 are hitting Black, Brown, and low-income communities the hardest and our goal is to lower the disparities seen in Dane County. We want to help protect our community and curb the spread of Covid-19. We have been organizing mask giveaways since the start of the pandemic at local grocery stores and community centers.

The last mask giveaway was on March 13th from 1-2pm at Woodman’s West in Madison. Volunteers set up a table and were able to give away around 100 masks. Mariah Kozmer, an intern at the Dane County Timebank, organized this mask giveaway. She said: “Overall, the mask giveaway was really successful. Many people expressed gratitude for the masks and the support we were able to provide to the community.” In addition, we were able to provide some child sized masks to students in the community. With schools reopening, there is an increased need of masks for youth. This was a great way to support our community. Thank you to the volunteers who made masks and who helped to give them away.

How to Get Involved

Do you sew? We need your help!  Please join us by either sewing masks, donating masks, or donating money to purchase masks. We also need volunteers for our mask giveaways. We are planning to do another mask giveaway towards the end of April. More details on this will come soon! If you are able to volunteer your time, please join us. You can email Mariah Kozmer at tan.timebank@gmail.com for more information on how to get involved!

mask giveaway for Truthsgiving

Join us as we celebrate Truthsgiving and do a mask giveaway.

There are many colonial mythologies about Indigenous Peoples and the founding of the US and Canada. Thanksgiving is one of them, however, in the words of Wamsutta Frank James, Wampanoag, “the Pilgrims had hardly explored the shores of Cape Cod four days before they had robbed the graves of my ancestors, and stolen their corn, wheat, and beans.” The truth is that real history has been whitewashed and that Thanksgiving perpetuates white supremacy and romanticized notions about Indigenous Peoples. To celebrate the current Thanksgiving mythology is to celebrate the theft of land through ethnic cleansing and enslavement. It is a lie that overlooks the genocide of Native American Indigenous Peoples and the enslavement of African Indigenous Peoples in order for settler-vigilantes and colonial militias to steal land and labor--the legacy of which is still felt today.

The Madison contribution to this effort is a Mask Giveaway at Woodman's West from 1 to 2 pm  November 25th. Questions? Write us at tan.timebank@gmail.com

Hi all. To date we've received 170 masks with another 75 being dropped off tomorrow. We also received a donation of $300 to go towards mask making efforts.

Our Restorative Justice Team will be heading out this Saturday and will be handing out masks and information on Covid-19 at Woodmans West from 1-2pm. We will continue to hand out masks at local grocery stores over the next few weeks. Stay tuned for locations and times.

We know the impacts of Covid-19 continue to hit Black, Brown, and poor people the hardest. We are looking forward to getting masks to these communities starting this weekend. Thank you to the timebank members and community members who continue to sew masks and give to this project. We appreciate your support.
