Eastside Kitchen Cabinet Members
Thanks to all the wonderful Eastsiders stepping up to create great Timebank partnerships and activities in their area. Here they are:
Chris Hunter
Chris was born in California. "You were born in California," her father told
her. He added, "And never go back!" To date, I have not. I have been
circulating between the stated of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Illinois.
I was raised in Rhinelander, Wisconsin (home of the Hodag!). I went to
school in Minnesota (St. No-Laugh College). I migrated from there to
Chicago, where I became a legislative aide to the Alderman of Lincoln Park
(Martin J. Oberman), and then became an Administrative Assistant for a
Michigan Ave. not-for-profit (and had the corner office overlooking the
lake!). I attend three years of courses at a center for Oriental Medicine,
and became an acupuncturist.
Life in Chicago got too stressful, so I moved to Milwaukee to enjoy some
family ties (ok, maybe more like family neglect). Life was hard... I ended
up homeless twice (not fun), but for mercifully brief periods of time. I was
most often helped by strangers and acquaintances who had no stake in my
well-being, but cared enough about other humans to give someone a hand. They
gave of themselves quite generously, and I will be forever grateful to them.
After getting my feet back under me, I decided to follow a life-long dream
of becoming a veterinarian. I finished up my pre-requisites at UW-Milwaukee,
then applied to Madison. I graduated in 1998 with my DVM.
I headed into community practice in Sullivan, WI. I worked half of the time
in the clinic with "companion animals" (aka "furred family members"). The
other half of the time I was slogging through manure, delivering calves,
gelding stallions, and vaccinating nearly anything that has four legs.
After just over a year, I headed from there to an emergency clinic in
Rockford. I worked nights, weekends, and holidays there, for 3 1/2 years. I
left 8 months after our son was born, when my partner needed brain surgery.
Not long after my partner's recovery, I went on to develop serious health
problems: Constant, crippling pain and neurological symptoms. It turned out
that it was caused by a Vitamin D3 deficiency... Fancy that... after
spending 2 decades locked in small rooms to study, and working nights for 3+
years... Not enough sunshine!
I had been paid well enough as a vet to have a higher-than-average
disability payment. Though I was homebound and in a wheelchair, the amount
of my benefit check disqualified me from absolutely ALL services that are
normally available to people with disabilities.
The good news? Eventually, this brought me to the Timebank! And I have been
enjoying this community ever since. I have provided medical and shopping
transportation to some folks who have no cars. I have taught knitting, and
provided companionship. I have tutored math. And in return, people have
helped me with my house and yard, taught me yoga, and hung out with me.
Awesome! Nowhere else does this kind of mutual collaboration happen!
The highlight was the International Timebanking Conference this summer. If
you have a chance to attend in 2009, jump at it!
So the moral of this story is: Follow your dreams, rely on your neighbors
and on the benevolence of strangers... and more importantly, take your
Vitamin D3!
Mariah Miller
I'm Mariah Miller... I'm excited to be asked to be part of the Kitchen Cabinet. Have been interested in the Time Bank for some time, and this is a good opportunity for me to be involved. I live in the Atwood neighborhood, have 3 children ages 23, 20 & 11. I'm probably best known in my role as event coordinator for Celebrating Youth!, Options & Alternatives in Education, and as the founder of Kids for Peace Day. I also was the coordinator for Martin Luther King Youth Service day - way back at the beginning. I've been a member of the Dane County Youth Resource Network since 1997. I work part-time at the Wisconsin Youth Company on the far SW side...and run my own business part time. www.ariesrisingproductions.com is my website - which will tell you a bit more about me - so I don't have to go on forever here. I'm really passionate about bringing people together through celebration, the arts, and creative self-expression, and enjoy groups where a wide range of cultures, age, and experiences are represented. My greatest skill is probably connecting the dots between people, organizations and projects. info@ariesrisingproductions.com. SASY neighbor

Kay DeWaide
My home away from home is just a hop off from Willy St. on Dewey Court
where I work as a family advocate. My other home is in the Village of
Poynette where I grow veggies, flowers, herbs and chickens. My interest
lies in helping people (including myself and my family) become connected
with a simple lifestyle, with inner creativity and with others with whom
they can share, learn and rejoice. I am a mother of five grown children
and grandmother of six. My affiliations are; Community Partnerships,
Inc.; Nami; Willy St. Coop; MATC alumni; Edgewood alumni; Dane Timebank;
Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health.
Dace Zeps, Worthington Park Neighborhood Assn.
My partner Tim and I live in the Worthington Park neighborhood. During the
day I work at the UW System as the office administrator for Academic &
Student Services. An occasional evening and most Saturday's I work
part-time as the office administrator for the Progressive Dane political
party. When I can, I consult local small businesses on efficiencies,
organizational structure, and change management. I recently became more
active in my community and currently serve as the President of the
Worthington Park Neighborhood Association. In addition to serving on the
newly created Eastside Dane County Timebank Kitchen Cabinet, I serve on the
East Isthmus Neighborhood Planning Council's Eastside Community Committee. My goal is to get as many people and organizations in my neighborhood
exchanging time for service as I can to strengthen our need for each other.
Pamela Hathaway, East Isthmus Neighborhood Planning Council
Community Organizer at the East Isthmus Neighborhoods Planning Council, loves timebanking as both an effective community building and organizing tool. EINPC is promoting the Timebank as a resource to Eastside neighborhood groups to recruit more participation. We'd like to work together on outreach (attending neighborhood group meetings and the eastside farmer's market). During the beginning stages, she/EINPC can support the cabinet by offering partnership, meeting space, copier use and whatnot. Ultimately, she sees the Timebank on the Eastside as a tool for organizations working together to build community power and make change on social justice issues. roots@eastisthmus.org. Tenney neighbor
Emily Steinwehe
Emily is an experienced Timebank member-coordinator who is helping the East side Kitchen Cabinet get started. Emily has been involved in leadership roles within the Dane County Timebank for years now. She coordinates the activities at the Northside Farmer's Market. And, she is a resident of the Eken Park neighborhood. esteinwehe@gmail.com. Eken Park neighbor
Amanda McKaig
Janet Marcelino
Janet is one of the Timebank's longest-standing and most active members and she'd absolutely love to help.
